In 2001 Mary officially became the first, and only, rated female guide serving these mountains. 3 Sisters Trekking Company in Nepal are pushing the boundaries for women in Nepal. They were one of the three winners in the Geotourism Challenge and now the Guardian weekend travel section has done a feature on them and among other things how they are trying to change things for women in Nepal, where there is gross inequality. They are training women as mountain guides and lobbying to prevent young children being used as workers in the tourist industry in Nepal.

I have written about the New Zealand based company Trekking 4 Women – a New Zealand site where Anne Young organises treks for women in Nepal and Africa. Today I came across the Three sisters Adventure Trekking Company where three Nepalese sisters Lucky, Dicky and Nicky Chhetri, are pioneers in the field of female trekking guides. Since 1994, they have worked towards empowering women in Nepal.
