For three wonderful years my partner Ngaire and I lived our dream of building and running a B&B/Lodge especially for women in the North of New Zealand. Waihoihoi Lodge was a purpose built lodge on several acres of organic gardens overlooking a fabulous view. Half way between the Bay of Islands and Auckland, it was ideally situated and drew women from Auckland for a break away, or from overseas on their journey around this great country.
Eighteen months ago Ngaire died of breast cancer, but with the help of friends, Ceridwyn and Danielle the vision of the Lodge has kept going offering hospitality to women from all over the world.
On 1 August 2008, the Lodge as it is will cease to exist – the building will be taken over by friends Ian and Phillip who will run a special place for gay men – Dragon Tree Lodge. I will be going overseas for four months, visiting women’s travel places around the world, and then on my return will build a new Waihoihoi Lodge next door. It will be smaller and have less garden, but will continue to offer hospitality to women from within New Zealand and around the world.
